Development of Long-Term Storage Technology for Chinese Cabbage - Physiological Characteristics of Postharvest Freshness in a Cooler with a Monitoring and Control Interface

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of this study was to develop long-term storage technology for Chinese cabbage in order to extend the period of availability of freshly harvested products. The scope of the paper deals with the use of a cooler with a remote monitoring and control interface in conjunction with use of packaging film. Methods: A cooler with a real time monitoring system was designed as a low-temperature storage facility to control temperature and relative humidity (RH). The effects of storage in high-density polyet… Show more

“…Additionally, the thickness of PET relieves the difference in the temperatures and hence, the use of plastic wrapping can ensure more constant temperature of the food even when the temperature of the warehouse fluctuates. The results of this study were similar to those on the use of plastic films for the preservation of Chinese cabbage (Lim et al, 2014).…”

“…pekinensis ) is a leafy vegetable that generally grows best from late summer to early winter but that can also be cultivated year-round depending on the genotype. Chinese cabbage is readily affected by various external environmental factors that lead to multiple nutrient losses, cell death-induced leaf yellowing, weight loss due to reduced relative humidity, and decomposition [ 7 , 8 ]. In Chinese cabbage, the leaf is the economically most important part of the plant; consequently, leaf senescence is responsible for major crop yield losses.…”

“…Higher CO 2 concentration is also used for an antimicrobial effect on the MAP; it can also extend the shelf life (Beaudry, 2000;Church and Parsons, 1995;Gorrish and Peppelenbos, 1992;Iqbal et al, 2009;Kader et al, 1989;Ooraikul andStiles, 1991, Farber et al, 2003). Hence, MAP is widely used for the preservation of fruits (Oliveira et al, 2015), vegetables (Helland et al, 2016), and meats (Rubio et al, 2016;Nair et al, 2015;Lim et al, 2014). Given that the film for MAP perfectly blocks the gas, the oxygen inside the package is consumed and anaerobic respiration results in food with an undesirable taste, physiological change, and decay from fungi (Lee et (Mangaraj et al, 2009;Syverud and Stenius, 2009).…”
