Development ofin vitroTechniques for the Important Medicinal PlantVeratrum californicum

Abstract: VERATRUM CALIFORNICUM (Liliaceae) is an important monocotyledonous medicinal plant which is the only source of the anticancer compound cyclopamine. An IN VITRO culture system for somatic embryogenesis and green plant regeneration of VERATRUM CALIFORNICUM was developed. Embryogenic calli were induced from mature embryos on induction medium. Five basal media supplemented with different growth regulators were evaluated for embryogenic callus induction, modified MS medium with 4 mg/L picloram showing the best resu… Show more

“…The enriched medium with added carbon source, optimized photoperiod or the stresses may enhance synthesis of alkaloids in culture (Rocha et al 2005, Bhat et al 2008). We suggest that certain level of differentiation may be necessary for enhanced content of secondary metabolites (see also Pande 2002, Ma et al 2006.…”

“…2) do not induce cyclopia [9] but may lead to other congenital birth defects and different types of toxicities [11,12]. Because of its potential medicinal use, in vitro techniques for propagating Veratrum californicum have been developed [13].…”

“…Metabolite production (or metabolism) is not only restricted to the specific tissues or cells, it is also modulated by different cellular and environmental factors (Pasquali et al 1992;Junaid et al 2008). From this observation it appears that the differentiation and development of the tissues are clearly the preconditions for the biosynthesis of metabolite (Pande et al 2002;Ma et al 2006). Literature suggests that reports on systemic monitoring of alliin in different stages of embryogenesis and in vitro grown plantlets are lacking.…”
