This study aims to prove the validity test and estimate the instrument's reliability to measure student achievement in the department of architectural engineering education in Indonesia. The cluster random sampling technique was used to determine the number of students consisting of 103 vocational education students. This study uses a survey method to examine and analyze the structure of students' competency achievements factors. The collected empirical data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). EFA test is intended to reveal factors that can be formed from instruments that have been established for measurement of achievements of vocational student competencies. The analysis results using EFA showed that the instrument had good construct validity. The result of this research shows that the instrument test for measuring the achievement of student competencies has good reliability and consists of 30 competency items covering ten competency aspects, namely general competencies, technical drawing, statically structures, basic building construction, land measurement engineering, software application and building interior design, road and bridge construction, estimated construction costs, building construction and utility, creative and entrepreneurship product competencies.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Training has significantly transformed the technical and vocational education and training sector to respond to socio-economic ills such as poverty, unemployment and inequalities. With the mission of the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training, TVET programmes are prioritised as a significance in responding to societal challenges by offering skills that are aligned to industry to enable youth and young adults to successfully enter the industry for their sustainable livelihoods. This study provides a critical analysis on alignment of the National Certificate (Vocational): Building and Civil Engineering programme) offered by TVET Colleges. This article is based on a case study of two vocational training institutions in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. A qualitative research approach was followed. The article used interviews and observations as data collection tools. The population for the study consisted of ten TVET teachers. The data were analysed by transcribing the data, coding, and thematic discussion using thematic analysis. The study's findings show that the NCV: Building and Civil Engineering programme is not aligned with the industry, as the workshop’s practical training is given inadequate time. The NCV: Building and Civil Engineering programme contains too many theoretical sections. The theoretical part is mainly offered to the students rather than hands-on practical training. The study concludes that the TVET sector faces challenges to meet the demand for industrial skills. This study recommends that the NCV program be evaluated urgently to address this issue and to ensure that it remains aligned with industry.

Purpose. The place of research in the educational development of any nation cannot be downplayed. The adoption of a methodological approach is significant in achieving valid results and sustainability. However, there does not appear to be an agreement on the methodological approach to developing a competency model for research in technical and vocational education among researchers. This study was designed to analyze the different methods used by researchers to bring out their strengths towards ensuring the adoption of a uniform methodology. Results. Findings show that there was no consistent and uniform technique for researching competency models in technical education. The outcome of this study has shown that researchers favour the use of qualitative and quantitative methods separately. This may be due to the ease and their convenience usage in terms of energy, time and resources. Scientific novelty. The listing and review of current articles from 2018 to 2021 in the domain of competency in technical education is novel as it shows the strengths and weaknesses in the usage of different methods by researchers. Similarly, the result shows the rate of research outcomes on a regional basis and document types. Practical value. The study is going to change the horizon and focus of researchers toward the adoption of the mixed-method research design in the 21st century because of its immense benefits in generating valid research results. The study was able to reveal that the source of data in mixed-method design is always acceptable to experts and the results of the findings can be generalized.
