Development of a Work Sampling Methodology for Behavioral Observations: Application to Teamwork

Abstract: Engineering programs must assess students' abilities to master "criteria 3 a-k." Skills such as teamwork, problem solving, design, and ethical understanding entail learning various processes; hence, assessing these outcomes is better accomplished by focusing on the process rather than the result. Methods for observing students' performance, such as 100 percent behavioral observation, are ideal but expensive. We extend work sampling, an economic industry-based alternative, to observe cognitive and behavioral pro… Show more

“…Brandt discussed Delta Design as an example of exploratory design games that are gaining popularity to demonstrate collaboration between individuals in participatory design projects (7). Besterfield-Sacre et al used it as a testbed for observing students' performance through behavioral observation (8). Svihla et al used Delta Design to demonstrate the increasing role of distributed expertise and authenticity in the development of design expertise (9).…”

“…More specific engineering observation protocols include the VanTH Observation System (VOS) and an engineering observation protocol (EOP) (Besterfield‐Sacre, Shuman, Wolfe, Clark, & Yildirim, ; Harris & Cox, ). These two protocols are also validated for use in postsecondary contexts.…”

“…Among the three components of the engagement construct, in the current study, a behavioural engagement is measured, as it enables a researcher to investigate outcomes 'in-action' and evaluate the individuals' ability to function in the higher level thinking of the learning domains (Besterfield-Sacre et al 2007). Behavioural engagement alone is worthy of research since behavioural engagement is associated with academic achievement and motivation (Borman & Overman 2004, Dotterer & Lowe 2011.…”
