Development of a system dynamics model based on Six Sigma methodology

Abstract: A dynamic model to analyze the complexity associated with the manufacturing systems and to improve the performance of the process through the Six Sigma philosophy is proposed. The research focuses on the implementation of the system dynamics tool to comply with each of the phases of the DMAIC methodology. In the first phase, define, the problem is articulated, collecting data, selecting the variables, and representing them in a mental map that helps build the dynamic hypothesis. In the second phase, measure, m… Show more

“…• Flow variables:These are elements that can be defined as temporary functions. It can be said that they collect the actions resulting from decisions made in the system, determining the variations in levels [22], as well as the variables births, deaths, migration, emigration, hiring, and firing.…”

“…Lagos, Mancilla, Leal, and Fox (2019) assessed the performance of a solution to the problem of assigning service squads by incorporating the variability of service times. Cardiel, Baeza-Serrato, and Lizárraga (2017) proposed a dynamic model to analyze the complexity associated with manufacturing systems and improve the performance of the process through the Six Sigma philosophy. Langroodi and Amiri (2016) used a system dynamics approach to design a five-level supply chain consisting of retailer, final product distributor, manufacturer, material distributor, and supplier in four different regions.…”

“…Some of these tools are the Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) (Binder et al , 2004), that helps understand causal relationships between variables, delays and feedback loop effects in a qualitative manner (Sterman, 2001), along with Group Model Building, which is an approach that helps in generating a mental model consensus among many stakeholders and subject matter experts (Bérard, 2010). Perhaps the most comprehensive work on the integration of Six Sigma and SD is that of Cardiel-Ortega et al (2017) that suggest that although SD is an obscure methodology, it can be seen as a unique tool in Six Sigma community in that it can help tackle problems that elude other methods.…”

“…Although the literature is limited on the usability of simulations in the define and measure phases, in this work, the authors note that Six Sigma can be integrated with SD as a support tool to complement existing tools to complete the loop of knowledge. SD provides a set of tools that can help the Six Sigma professional during the define phase (Cardiel-Ortega et al , 2017). One of these tools is called Group Model Building, which is used to generate a mental model alignment among all the stakeholders and subject matter experts of the organization (Bérard, 2010).…”
