The purpose of this paper is to model one of the urban network problems, the issue of water leakage. In order to manage water leakage, the specific area should be partially isolated from the rest of the network. As Geospatial Information System (GIS) is a powerful technology in spatial modeling, analysis and visualization of the water network management, a web GIS system for finding optimal valves to close in the event of an incident was developed. The system consists of a new GIS based algorithm for identifying the ideal valves to isolate the desired pipeline. The algorithm is able to identify optimum valves in a water distribution network in the shortest time by using the traceability in GIS web services. The system uses the functions of storing and managing the spatial data by expert users based on web 2.0 technology. The system was implemented and evaluated for Tehran’s district 5 water distribution network using Silverlight, C# and ArcGIS SDK (Software Development Kit). The evaluations demonstrated the accuracy of the algorithm and the operational viability of the system developed.

Cloud computing has made federated database systems (FDBS) significantly more practical to implement than in the past. As part of a recent Web-based Geographic Information System (WebGIS) project, we are employing cloudnative technologies (from the container ecosystem) to develop a federated database (DB) infrastructure, to help manage and utilise the distributed and various geospatial data. Unfortunately, there seem to be inherent challenges and complexity of applying the container and Kubernetes technologies to building and running DB systems. Considering that most of the geospatial and theme data are pre-obtained and fixed in our WebGIS project, we decided to focus on the read-only user queries and still resort to Kubernetes to implement an FDBS instance to use. Unlike the de facto practices (e.g., using the StatefulSets mechanism, extending Kuberentes APIs, or employing KubeFed), our solution for Kubernetes-aided FDBS simplifies the tech stack by investigating the fractal object of federated data management, inclusively containerising DB instances, and using the lightweight Deployment mechanism to handle stateless DB containers. Overall, this research not only reveals an easy-to-implement approach to constructing read-only components in a fully-fledged FDBS, but also proposes and demonstrates a novel methodology for FDBS investigations.

Pressures and Status of the Riparian Vegetation in Greek Rivers: Overview and Preliminary Assessment

Riparian zones play an important role in the ecological stability of rivers. In particular, the quality of the riparian vegetation is a significant component of the hydromorphological status. In Europe, the QBR index (Qualitat del Bosc de Ribera) and the River Habitat Survey (RHS) are commonly used for the qualitative assessment of the riparian vegetation. In this study, we estimated the QBR index and the Riparian Quality index, which is derived from the RHS method, for 123 river reaches of the National Monitoring Network of Greece. Our field work included the completion of RHS and QBR protocols, as well as the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The aim of this study is to assess the riparian vegetation status and to identify linkages with the dominant land uses within the catchment. Correlation analysis was used to identify the relationships between hydromorphological alterations and the degradation of the riparian vegetation, as well as their connection to land uses in the catchment area. Our results highlighted severe modifications of the riparian vegetation for the majority of the studied reaches. We also showed a differentiation of the QBR with respect to changes in the altitude and the land uses in the catchment area. Overall QBR reflects the variation in the riparian vegetation quality better than RQI. Our findings constitute an assessment of the status of the riparian zones in Greek rivers and set the basis for further research for the development of new and effective tools for a rapid quality assessment of the riparian zones.
