Agriculture is one of the economic sectors that affect climate change contributing to greenhouse gas emissions directly and indirectly. There is a trend of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions reduction, but any practice in this direction should not affect negatively farm productivity and economics because this would limit its implementation, due to the high global food and feed demand and the competitive environment in this sector. Precision agriculture practices using high-tech equipment has the ability to reduce agricultural inputs by site-specific applications, as it better target inputs to spatial and temporal needs of the fields, which can result in lower greenhouse gas emissions. Precision agriculture can also have a positive impact on farm productivity and economics, as it provides higher or equal yields with lower production cost than conventional practices. In this work, precision agriculture technologies that have the potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions are presented providing a short description of the technology and the impacts that have been reported in literature on greenhouse gases reduction and the associated impacts on farm productivity and economics. The technologies presented span all agricultural practices, including variable rate sowing/planting, fertilizing, spraying, weeding and irrigation.

ffluent management has become increasingly important among livestock farming activities because of: i) the need to valorize a sub-product with a high fertilizing potential, ii) the high costs associated with spreading operations, and iii) the environmental impacts that could result from inadequate effluent management at the farm level. Due to this issue, the European Commission issued several Directives aimed at protecting the environment while ensuring that farmers could achieve proper production levels (Ruiz-Ramos et al., 2011). In particular, Directive 91/676/EC is currently the main regulation aimed at protecting water from nitrate accumulation due to farming operations. Due to this directive, nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs) have been set with strict regulations regarding the timing and rates of nitrogen application in these zones. In the NVZs, a specific threshold limits the application rate to 170 kg ha -1 y -1 for nitrogen. However, this threshold is normally 340 kg ha From a technology perspective, strict compliance with these limits can be achieved using control systems that use "variable rate technology" (VRT) for spreading fertilizer. These systems are generally classified into four groups that correspond to the following increasing automation levels adapted from Funk and Robert, (2003).• Automation level 0: This system uses a constant-flow rate distribution and requires devices to deliver a predefined rate of effluent regardless of the operating conditions.
