Development of a Safety- and Energy-Aware Impedance Controller for Collaborative Robots

Abstract: In contexts where robots share their workspace with humans, safety is of utmost importance. Consequently, in recent years, a big impulse has been given to the design of human-friendly robots by involving both mechanical and control design aspects. Regarding controller design, this often involves introducing compliance and ensuring asymptotic stability using an interaction control scheme and passivity theory. Moreover, when human operators physically interact with the robot during work, strict safety measures b… Show more

“…The field of robotics has seen large growth in the area of collaborative robotics; robots working both with each other and with humans [1], [2]. While traditionally robots are operated in isolation or in harmony with other moving entities of explicit and unambiguous motion routines, this trend can create a highly unstructured shared workspace [3]. Humans can be unpredictable and it can be both complex and costly to integrate robotic systems in close proximity [4].…”

“…The impedance control approach [124][125][126] is employed when a mechatronic device is in contact with its environment or with a human. It is an important control concept in modern robotics that is demonstrated by numerous applications [127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140]. The mechanical impedance, which features a force response of a body or a system of bodies on imposed velocity or position, can be described as a force-velocity relationship or force-position relationship.…”
