Design solutions for the problems of the rock side slope stability, in general, are one of the most critical issues in geo-technical engineering profession, due to the fact that the values of rock parameters are difficult to be considered reliable, because of the uncertainties existing in geological system. This research aims to introduce reliability based design of the rock side slope stability considering optimal cost value. The idea for obtaining the optimal cost value depends on two main critical parameters. These two main critical parameters are uni-axial compressive strength (U.C.S) and geologic strength index (G.S.I). Both of them have been calculated based on statistical calculations of mean and standard deviations. A strength criterion is needed to characterize the rockmass in geotechnical engineering. There are three criteria are used to describe the strength of a material: bilinear Mohr-Coulomb criterion, nonlinear Hoek-Brown criterion and special spalling criterion must be used in special case of massive, brittle rocks. Nonlinear Hoek-Brown criterion has been used in this study; because of some limitations associated with the use of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. RocData program have been utilized for obtaining the Hoek-Brown parameters (m, s), Slide program has been employed for calculating the reliability index, factor of safety and probability of failure for each case study for upper plateau in Mokattam area. The concept of design is based on the necessity of using reinforcement. If the design of using rock parameters is safe and reliable, there is no need for reinforcement; otherwise design of rock bolts should be used as a support system to improve reliability and factor of safety. The current simplified method has been utilized to consider the cost of failure to find the optimal length of support and optimal reliability index. The study concluded that the suggested technique of nonlinear Hoek Brown Criterion is effective for helping the designer in finding the optimal length of support that meets the optimal reliability index and optimal cost value for two main critical parameters.

Analysis on the hidden cost of prefabricated buildings based on FISM-BN

Facing the pressure of environment, sustainable development is the demand of the current construction industry development. Prefabricated construction technologies has been actively promoted in China. Cost has always been one of the important factors in the development of prefabricated buildings. The hidden cost of prefabricated buildings has a great impact on the total cost of the project, and it exists in the whole process of building construction. In this paper innovatively studies the cost of prefabricated buildings from the perspective of hidden cost. In order to analysis the hidden cost of prefabricated buildings, the influencing factor index system in terms of design, management, technology, policy and environment has been established, which includes 13 factors in total. And the hidden cost analysis model has been proposed based on FISM-BN, this model combines fuzzy interpretive structure model(FISM) with Bayesian network(BN). This model can comprehensively analyze the hidden cost through the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. And the analysis process is dynamic, not fixed at a certain point in time to analyze the cost. We can get the internal logical relationship among the influencing factors of the hidden cost, and present it in the form of intuitive chart by FISM-BN. Furthermore the model could not only predict the probability of the hidden cost of prefabricated buildings and realize in-time control through causal reasoning, but also predict the posterior probability of other influencing factors through diagnostic reasoning when the hidden cost occurs and find out the key factors that lead to the hidden cost. Then the final influencing factors are determined after one by one check. Finally, the model is demonstrated on the hidden cost analysis of prefabricated buildings the probability of recessive cost is 26%. In the analysis and control of the hidden cost of prefabricated buildings, scientific and effective decision-making and reference opinions are provided for managers.

Causes of Quality Failures in Building Energy Renovation Projects of Northern China: A Review and Empirical Study

Building energy renovations can effectively improve the environmental performance and energy sustainability of existing buildings. From 2007 onwards, the Chinese government has promoted energy-saving renovations of existing urban residential buildings. Nevertheless, various quality failures happen during the construction period in energy-saving renovation projects of residential buildings. Yet, the causes and their characters remain largely unknown. Through a literature review, this paper investigates the causes of quality failures. Validated through experts’ interviews, a total of 18 causes were identified in building energy renovation projects. These causes were analyzed from two main aspects: the importance of a cause (related to impact and frequency), and the level of effort required to address a cause (related to origin and scale), using both a questionnaire survey and a focus group. The results indicate that the critical causes of quality failures are working under high-cost and high-time pressure, adverse natural conditions, fraud of construction companies, incomplete construction site survey, poor checking procedures of supervisors, poor operational skilled workers, inadequate equipment performance, lack of experienced project managers, and incomplete building information in projects. The causes were classified as external and internal causes of building energy renovation projects. The outcome of this paper should aid policy makers and project coordinators to focus on critical causes of quality failures, and to develop effective actions and policy interventions to achieve successful renovation projects with high-quality performance.
