Development of a novel cellulose foam augmented with candle-soot derived carbon nanoparticles for solar-powered desalination of brackish water

Abstract: Candle soot nanoparticles deposited onto hydrophilic cellulose foam greatly improved the solar-powered steam generation and yield of freshwater, resulting in the production of low-cost potable water from brackish input water.

“…Distilled water and un-treated water quality is tabulated in Table . 4. The outcomes shows that the water after desalination is within the allowable tolerance limit prescribed by IS 10500-2012 Indian standards [26]. and later, the heat propagated from top to the bottom of the cans.…”

“…To satisfy the requirements of host materials (water supply and thermal insulation), cellulose with different formations, such as cellulose membranes, cellulose aerogels, cellulose paper, and cellulose foam, have been explored. [30][31][32][33] Apart from the water supply throughout the evaporator, recently developed 1D or 2D water pathway designs confine the supplementary water into certain cellulose channels, which suppress the thermal loss and provide desirable water supply. Other efficient substrate materials, including air-laid paper, [34] stainless mesh, [35] graphene oxide (GO) aerogel networks, [36] and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates, [37] have also been investigated.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] Typical solar evaporator materials must have high light absorption, excellent photo-thermal conversion performance, good thermal insulation, and outstanding water transfer capability. [11][12][13][14] In order to improve the evaporation rate of water as well as the efficiency of photo-thermal conversion, varieties of photo-thermal materials have been investigated, mainly including metallic nanoparticles, 15,16 carbon-based materials, 1,17,18 natural materials, 19,20 polymer materials, 14,21,22 and semiconductors. 23,24 Nonetheless, there are two factors that seriously restrict the development and practical application of solar evaporators.…”
