Development of a Model for the Acquisition and Assessment of Advanced Laparoscopic Suturing Skills Using an Automated Device

Abstract: This study provides validity evidence for the task as a measure of laparoscopic suturing skill using an automated suturing device. It could help trainees acquire the skills they need to better prepare for clinical learning.

“…6,[13][14][15][16] There have been emerging studies for developing new models for advanced laparoscopic tasks which included continuous suturing with free needle and the Endo Stitch TM device. 6,7 There are still very limited low-cost validated solutions which utilize the widely available trainer box for laparoscopic intracorporeal continuous suturing. Given the importance and significant implications of graduating general surgery residents proficient in continuous laparoscopic suturing, we feel there is more room for study, with only a few papers addressing continuous suturing simulation and methods of assessment.…”

“…Bilgic et al have also examined the task of continuous suturing, however, this model used the Endo Stitch TM device which is not readily available to all trainees and surgeons. 7 The aggregate performance score in this study was created in order to provide a benchmark for future research on this model. Minimizing accuracy penalties is an important consideration independent of time required for gaining proficiency in laparoscopic continuous suturing.…”

“…A gap is also evident from our data; all participants stated that training for ALP skills happen mostly in the OR, with lack of effective resources available for learning outside of the OR. Although some advanced LS tasks have been developed with preliminary validity evidence, [21][22][23][24][25] needs assessments were not detailed to optimally define the key skills required to perform ALP, in order to guide the development of an advanced laparoscopy simulation program.…”
