Development of a large-area Multigap RPC with adequate spatial resolution for muon tomography

Abstract: We study the performance of a large-area 2-D Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) designed for muon tomography with high spatial resolution. An efficiency up to 98% and a spatial resolution of around 270 µm are obtained in cosmic ray and X-ray tests. The performance of the MRPC is also investigated for two working gases: standard gas and pure Freon. The result shows that the MRPC working in pure Freon can provide higher efficiency and better spatial resolution.

“…The spatial resolution can be obtained from the deviation between hit position and reconstructed position. The X-ray hit position is re-constructed by the charge center-of-gravity method [14]. where Q i is the charge induced on the readout strip after the electronics pre-amplifier, and x is the reconstructed position.…”

“…The width of the readout strip is 1.1mm and the pitch is 2.54 mm for both PCBs. The size of the MRPC is 1160 mm ×1160 mm and the effective region is about 1059 mm ×1059 mm [14].The number of readout channels in each dimension is 432.…”

“…In the car inspection project, the structure of the MRPCs is the same as the TUMUTY MRPC, which has 6 gaps, each 0.25 mm thick, but with a larger sensitive area of 1060 mm × 1060 mm [18,19]. Moreover, this detector features two-dimensional readout, as shown in figure 4.…”

“…The structure of the large scale and high spatial resolution two-dimensional readout MRPC prototype is presented in figure 1 [14]. The prototype is composed of two parallel resistive plate electrodes with six gas gaps divided by five resistive floating glasses whose bulk resistivity is about 10 12 Ω•cm.…”
