Development of a Japanese Version of the Academic and Athletic Identity Scale

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop a Japanese version of the Academic Athletic Identity Scale (AAIS-J) , originally developed by Yukhymenko-Lescroart (2014) and to examine the relationship between academic athletic identity and grade point average (GPA). The participants were 251 student athletes who compete at the national collegiate level (male:155, female:96, age: M=20.33, SD=1.18). The Academic Athletic Identity Scale (AAIS) (Yukhymenko-Lescroart, 2014) was translated into Japanese using the back-tra… Show more

“…Athletic identity has been defined as “the degree to which an individual identifies with the athletic role” [ 1 ]. Athletic identity is often used to examine the social identity of student-athletes and encompasses the psychological, emotional, and behavioral components of an athlete’s self-identity [ 2 ]. The relationship between athletic identity and mental health has been examined.…”

“…This is the case of Yukhymenko-Lescroart (2014), who developed and validated the Athletic and Academic Identity Scale (AAIS). If some studies have proposed a validation of this scale in other languages such as Japanese (Hagiwara et al, 2020) or Brazilian (Fiochi-Marques et al, 2022), this measure is not available in French, which limits the possibility of using it with French-speaking student-athletes. The purpose of the present study was to translate the AAIS into French and examine its construct and concurrent validity with a French student-athlete sample.…”
