Development of a hardware in the loop simulation system for electric power steering in vehicles

Abstract: In this paper, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system was developed before the development of an electric power steering (EPS) system in a vehicle. This study was focused on the establishment of the HILS system. Driving conditions are simulated with the HILS system. The actual steering input parameters are confirmed on the monitor while driving the HILS system. The steering forces observed in the simulation with the developed HILS system are similar to those in real vehicle tests. The developed HILS s… Show more

“…Due to these advantages, there are a number of commercially available products specialized in HIL simulations of ECUs; e.g., products from AVL, dSPACE, and ETAS. There are numerous HIL systems to test various functions of the ECU; e.g., HIL of Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) [6,7], HIL of Electronic Power Steering (EPS) [8], HIL for testing of velocity/distance controller for driver safety system [9], HIL system of throttle body for testing of engine throttle controller [10], and HIL system to test diesel hybrid electric vehicle [11].…”

“…Steering torque is defined as the torque a driver applies on the steering column while turning the steering wheel. When an appropriate assistant torque by an assist motor is applied in the same direction as the driver's steering direction, the amount of steering torque required for steering can be significantly reduced [3][4][5][6]. In addition, adjustment of the characteristics of the assistant torque allows the driver to experience various steering feels [7].…”
