Development of a digital breast phantom for photoacoustic computed tomography

Abstract: Photoacoustic (PA) imaging provides morphological and functional information about angiogenesis and thus is potentially suitable for breast cancer diagnosis. However, the development of PA breast imaging has been hindered by inadequate patients and a lack of ground truth images. Here, we report a digital breast phantom with realistic acoustic and optical properties, with which a digital PA-ultrasound imaging pipeline is developed to create a diverse pool of virtual patients with three types of masses: ductal c… Show more

“… 28 , 31 A digital phantom is a voxelized image, where each voxel is assigned to tissue class: glandular, adipose, artery, vein, terminal duct lobular unit, duct, nipple, skin, muscle, and ligament. 30 , 34 For simplicity, in the following discussion, we refer to a VICTRE phantom as an operator assigning an index representing a tissue to a region in 3D space so . The effect is a decomposition of the domain in subsets composed of a single tissue so .…”

“…Recently, VICTRE was proposed as a tool for tomosynthesis of realistic breast digital phantoms for applications in z-ray mammography 28 and was subsequently adopted as a test database for other optical imaging applications. 29 31 Hereby, we propose a simulation pipeline based on VICTRE for the generation of functional phantoms for a combined US+DOT hand held probe, adopting—as an example—the integrated probe developed in the SOLUS Project. 32 Based on this, we identify a reconstruction method and a classification procedure with the aim of best discriminating benign lesions from malignant ones.…”

“…It is widely recognized that the female breast consists of vessels, adipose, glandular, and other tissues. Since the optical parameters of adipose, glandular and other tissues are relatively similar and the vessels deviate significantly from them 33 35 , we define the adipose, glandular, and other tissues as the homogenous surroundings (i.e, breast) and the vessels as the only heterogeneity (i.e., vessel). The partial-current boundary condition in Eq.…”

“…This feature makes photoacoustic imaging enjoy great advantages in early cancer detection [15]. Domestic photoacoustic imaging started late, but the development of system miniaturization and integration, the development of key system components, the optimization of theoretical algorithms, and the expansion of application directions have developed rapidly with the joint efforts of researchers [16]. As the most cost-effective way to improve image quality, reconstruction algorithms have always been the focus in the development of photoacoustic imaging.…”
