Development of a Computerized Adaptive Test for Depression

Abstract: Context Unlike other areas of medicine, psychiatry is almost entirely dependent on patient report to assess the presence and severity of disease; therefore, it is particularly crucial that we find both more accurate and efficient means of obtaining that report. Objective To develop a computerized adaptive test (CAT) for depression, called the Computerized Adaptive Test–Depression Inventory (CAT-DI), that decreases patient and clinician burden and increases measurement precision. Design Case-control study. … Show more

“…It aims to mimic the functioning of the clinician using a limited AI that will adapt the questions automatically to patient answers using a database containing a large number of possible questions. These computerized questionnaires, for example, can be used to diagnose depression (Gibbons et al, 2012). Some related systems use ‘avatars’ of psychiatrists able to converse directly with patients: the Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) (Philip et al, 2017).…”

“…Promoting widespread use of effective preventive interventions will require greater use of technology. This may involve mobile-and media-based interventions that reach entire populations, and innovations such as brief and effective systems for mental health screening in primary care settings (Gibbons et al, 2012 A national data monitoring system is needed that provides community data on the prevalence of risk and protective factors and behavioral health outcomes for local prevention planning. Such a system would also allow these data to be disaggregated for the sake of examining and promoting health equity as well as aggregated to state and national levels for monitoring epidemiology.…”

“…Efforts have been made to develop item banks for CAT depression instruments (Fliege et al, 2005;Forkmann et al, 2013;Gardner et al, 2004;Gibbons et al, 2008Gibbons et al, , 2012. Among them, the PROMIS system includes a depression domain as part of the overall health profile; it is also the only IRT-based depression measure available in Spanish.…”
