Over recent years, the independent adoption of lean construction and building information modeling (BIM) has shown improvements in construction industry efficiency. Because these approaches have overlapping concepts, it is thought that their synergistic adoption can bring many more benefits. Today, implementing the lean–BIM theoretical framework is still challenging for many companies. This paper conducts a comprehensive review with the intent to identify prevailing interconnected lean and BIM areas. To this end, 77 papers published in AEC journals and conferences over the last decade were reviewed. The proposed weighting matrix showed the most promising interactions, namely those related to 4D BIM-based visualization of construction schedules produced and updated by last planners. The authors also show evidence of the lack of a sufficiently integrated BIM–Last Planner System® framework and technologies. Thus, we propose a new theoretical framework considering all BIM and LPS interactions. In our model, we suggest automating the generation of phase schedule using joint BIM data and a work breakdown structure database. Thereafter, the lookahead planning and weekly work plan is supported by a field application that must be able to exchange data with the enterprise resource planning system, document management systems, and report progress to the BIM model.

The Production Strategy Process (PSP) is an integral part of production planning and control as it defines how production processes are structured and designed and outlines how production will be executed. PSP involves massive information transfer and communication among project participants. While BIM can improve the flow of information, the paradox of designing 3D models in 2D space remains. This paradox indicates that new visualization technologies are needed to leverage the use of information in the PSP. As Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, continues to evolve, it is imperative that construction firms seek, find, and adopt new technologies. This research employed Augmented Reality (AR) as a new user interface in the PSP. The current state of practice of PSP was investigated and current challenges are identified. The opportunities to integrate AR were defined, and an AR-enabled future state was proposed. Next, an AR-enabled PSP prototype using the Microsoft HoloLens was implemented and validated on a real-world healthcare project. Usability testing was then conducted using a one-on-one protocol to validate the prototype with 20 participants. Surveys were the deployed to qualitatively assess the impact of integrating AR into PSP. The difference between the traditional PSP and the AR-enabled PSP was tested through a series of hypotheses comparing both processes. The results demonstrate that the AR-enabled PSP offers significant benefits over the Traditional PSP: improved collaboration, reduced miscommunication, increased quality and detection of errors, enhanced decision-making, better documentation, better information access, improved information flow, increased input accuracy, and increased integration of safety considerations. Additionally, the technology, software, and hardware were also evaluated, and, on average, the findings demonstrated the potential of AR in production planning.

The research aims to demonstrate the role of BIM and construction management tools as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in enabling efficient production planning, monitoring, and control, which helps streamline construction project delivery. The research demonstrates the importance of effective communication through efficient information management by deploying digital technology that helps overcome inherent inefficiencies and wastes in the construction management processes. The research follows a case study-based approach to highlight the success of deploying ICT for efficient production management through improved collaboration and communication on an Instructional Building project in California. The research demonstrates the success of ICT in enabling efficient production planning by allowing accurate visualisation of the sequence of works to be executed. With accurate and timely updates from site, multiple trades have been able to communicate effectively, thereby enabling effective control of any issues or deviation. The result was a 6-weeks early completion of the project than initially planned. While ICT has played a crucial role in streamlining construction project delivery over the past few decades, this research dives deeper into understanding where the improvement stems from, i.e., the quality of information offered by technology and its best use towards driving efficiency and collaboration within the project teams. Inefficiencies are common across the construction industry stemming from inaccurate project planning and control. With ICT and its efficient deployment, project teams can define accurate production sequencing, visualise the flow of work, and take proactive decisions to control the impact on schedule. The research provides process-based key insights by focusing on the critical aspects of ICT for data visualisation, data sharing, and data analysis, that helped take informed planning and control decisions for efficient production management for successful early completion of the project.
