Development and Tropical Transition of an Alpine Lee Cyclone. Part II: Orographic Influence on the Development Pathway

Abstract: The development and subsequent tropical transition of a subsynoptic-scale cyclone over the Gulf of Genoa (GoG) on 15 November 2007 led to the rapid onset of tropical storm-force winds near the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. This study evaluates the influence of two key ingredients on the cyclogenesis event: a near-surface warm potential temperature perturbation in the lee of the Alps and a mountain-scale potential vorticity (PV) banner.A high-resolution modeling system is used to perform a set of attribution… Show more

“…Therefore, mountains plausibly act as a reservoir of relatively high PV values that potentially reinforces cyclones. This hypothesis has been confirmed in a case study by McTaggart-Cowan et al (2010b). The authors performed several sensitivity tests on the dynamics of a medicane that developed close to the Alps.…”

“…filaments of diabatically produced PV at the wake of mountains (Rotunno et al 1999;Epifanio and Durran, 2002;Schar et al 2003;Flamant et al 2004). Especially when combined with the upper-tropospheric PV streamer, PV banners are suggested to reinforce cyclones (Tsidulko and Alpert, 2001;McTaggart-Cowan et al 2010a, 2010b. Therefore, the uniqueness of the region adds a higher degree of complexity to the processes implicated in Mediterranean cyclone development.…”

“…2). Unless otherwise noted, PV anomalies are computed relative to an Eady (1949) basic state as proposed by McTaggart-Cowan et al (2006). This inner grid is coded CMCGEMH/S, a 3.58 southward shift of the CMCGEMH grid used for the D-PHASE project designed to improve the GoG cyclone's placement within the domain.…”

“…The model uses the procedure of a time-dependent adjustable orography (Benoit et al 2002;McTaggart-Cowan et al 2010) to improve the initialization of atmospheric fields in complex terrain. This procedure (known as ''growing orography'') consists of adjusting the orographic height over the first hours of integration in order to reduce the interpolation problems associated with abrupt changes of the topography at the beginning of the simulation.…”
