The traditional method of producing bio-organic fertilizer contains two consecutive composting stages which, however, is time-consuming and requires high input of energy and cost. This study attempted to combine two consecutive stages into one single step. Paenibacillus polymyxa, as an antagonistic strain to control anthracnose in Chinese Pakchoi, was used as inoculum to obtain bio-organic fertilizers through two approaches: two consecutive stages (TCS) composting as control and the proposed one step through (OST) composting. The resulting two bio-organic fertilizers produced by TCS and OST were tested for the disease incidence and disease resistant index, and the fertility on growth of Chinese Pakchoi. The results of relative abundance of P. polymyxa showed no significant difference between two kinds of bio-organic fertilizers in phylum, family and genus. The disease incidence of bio-organic fertilizers produced by OST and TCS reduced by 61.40% and 68.42%, respectively, as compared to the control group, where the difference was not significant. The growth promoting effect was remarkable, although the difference in the fertility on the growth was not significant. Compared with the traditional TCS method, the novel OST method could improve efficiency of bio-organic fertilizer production by 42.86% per year according to this study.

Recently, it was suggested that the nitrite (NO2−) produced from NO3− by oral bacteria might contribute to oral and general health. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the detailed information about the bacterial NO2-production in the oral biofilm. Dental plaque and tongue-coating samples were collected, then the NO2-producing activity was measured. Furthermore, the composition of the NO2−-producing bacterial population were identified using the Griess reagent-containing agar overlay method and molecular biological method. NO2−-producing activity per mg wet weight varied among individuals but was higher in dental plaque. Additionally, anaerobic bacteria exhibited higher numbers of NO2−-producing bacteria, except in the adults’ dental plaque. The proportion of NO2−-producing bacteria also varied among individuals, but a positive correlation was found between NO2−-producing activity and the number of NO2−-producing bacteria, especially in dental plaque. Overall, the major NO2−-producing bacteria were identified as Actinomyces, Schaalia, Veillonella and Neisseria. Furthermore, Rothia was specifically detected in the tongue coatings of children. These results suggest that dental plaque has higher NO2−-producing activity and that this activity depends not on the presence of specific bacteria or the bacterial compositions, but on the number of NO2−-producing bacteria, although interindividual differences were detected.

The growing need for the use of clean energy has led society to seek alternatives to fossil fuels in order to less pollute the environment. Sugarcane has been known to produce enough biomass and to have associative microorganisms, such as plant growth-promoting bacteria (PgPB), which have the potential to improve the yield of crops. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and the isotopic dilution of 15 N of microbial inoculants containing endophytic diazotrophic bacteria, individually inoculated and in mixture, on productivity, technological quality and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of sugarcane variety RB92579. The experiment was conducted for three consecutive years, comprising different crop cycles, in a completely randomized block design with four replications. The evaluations were at 11 months after planting for plant-cane, and at 12 months after cutting for ratoon cane and second ratoon cane. The contribution of BNF by 15 N natural abundance technique to inoculated treatments ranged from 18% to 57.31%. This study showed that no strain promoted the improvement on yield and biological nitrogen fixation during the three cycles of sugarcane (plant-cane, ratoon cane and second ratoon cane). However, industrial characteristics of sugar cane can be affectd by PGPB inoculation.
