Development and evaluation of the psychometric properties of a brief parenting scale (PS-7) for the parents of adolescents

Abstract: This study aimed to develop a seven-item brief parenting scale (PS-7) based on the original parenting scale (PS) and various other shortened versions and with a better factor structure for the parents of adolescents. The scale was tested with a sample of 3,777 parents (2,205 mothers and 1,572 fathers). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate the dimensionality of the different versions of the PS. Only the PS-7 with a two-factor structure, i.e., laxness (three items) and overreactivity (four items), s… Show more

“…So, the bigger sample size should be recruited and be used to further validation. More and more literatures evaluate and validate new scales with both EFA and CFA [30,31]. In the present we just used EFA to confirm the reliability and validity of the TFI-CN, we will collect more independent data to replicate and evaluate the construct validity of the scales with CFA.…”

“…To avoid the potential problem for over-fitting highlighted in the structural equation modelling (SEM) literature [ 44 , 45 ], the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were computed based on different datasets obtained by randomly stratifying Study 1 ( n = 1533) into two datasets (Sample 1, n = 767; Sample 2, n = 766). Each of the samples reflected the original sex ratio of the participants [ 46 ]. Sample 1 ( n = 767) was then used to select the items for the CRIT using a stepwise confirmatory factor analytical (SCOFA) approach [ 47 ].…”

“…The item selection process for the abbreviation version of the WDS was based on the Stepwise Confirmatory Factor Analytical approach (SCOFA) [35] and the criteria and practice stipulated in the literature on scale development and validation [36][37][38][39][40][41][42]. The following two-step procedure has been adopted.…”

“…In addition to the above criteria, the results should demonstrate acceptable model fit with χ 2 / df ≤ 3 [53][54][55][56]. To avoid the potential for over-fitting, we conducted the CFA on the newly proposed BWDS with different datasets obtained from various waves of the study to evaluate its factorial validity [39,57,58].…”
