Development and characterization of a novel nanoemulsion drug-delivery system for potential application in oral delivery of protein drugs

Abstract: Background:The stability of protein drugs remains one of the key hurdles to their success in the market. The aim of the present study was to design a novel nanoemulsion drug-delivery system (NEDDS) that would encapsulate a standard-model protein drug -bovine serum albumin (BSA) -to improve drug stability. Methods: The BSA NEDDS was prepared using a phase-inversion method and pseudoternary phase diagrams. The following characteristics were studied: morphology, size, zeta potential, drug loading, and encapsulati… Show more

“…It is well known that PdI is a key factor affecting the spread of the particle size distribution; smaller values reflect a narrower size range. 11 These data show that the stability of the nanoemulsion vaccine was narrowly distributed and demonstrated good stability. The average zeta potential of this nanoemulsion was -7.33 mV; the zeta potential has a narrow distribution, as shown in Figure 3D.…”

“…11 The oil phase (isopropyl myristate), the surfactant (Cremophor EL-35 ® ), and the co-surfactant (propylene glycol) were chosen in this study. The nanoemulsion vaccine was prepared in the following order: surfactant, co-surfactant, oil, and protein, that is, SCOH.…”

“…A novel nanoemulsion formula was prepared, as described previously. 13 Briefly, a powder of CNE was added to the mixture of Tween 80, propylene glycol, and IPM, and the nanoemulsion was prepared by phase inversion method, adding the mixture dropwise to the aqueous phase under gentle agitation until a transparent and easily flowing nanoemulsion was observed.…”
