Mercury pollution control has become a global goal. The accurate estimate of long-term mercury emissions in China is critical to evaluate the global mercury budget and the emission reduction potentials. In this study, we used a technology-based approach to compile a consistent series of China's atmospheric mercury emissions at provincial level from 1978 to 2014. China totally emitted 13 294 t of anthropogenic mercury to air during 1978-2014, in which gaseous elemental mercury, gaseous oxidized mercury, and particulate-bound mercury accounted for 58.2%, 37.1%, and 4.7%, respectively. The mercury removed during this period were 2085 t in coal-fired power plants (counting 49% of mercury input), 7259 t in Zn smelting (79%), 771 t in coal-fired industrial boilers (25%), and 658 t in cement production plants (27%), respectively. Annual mercury emissions increased from 147 t in 1978 to 530 t in 2014. Both sectoral and spatial emissions of atmospheric mercury experienced significant changes. The largest mercury emission source evolved from coal-fired industrial boilers before 1998, to zinc smelting during 1999-2004, coal-fired power plants during 2005-2008, finally to cement production after 2009. Coal-fired industrial boilers and cement production have become critical hotpots for China's mercury pollution control.

China took aggressive air pollution control measures from 2013 to 2017, leading to the mitigation of atmospheric mercury pollution as a cobenefit. This study is the first to systematically evaluate the effect of five major air pollution control measures in reducing mercury emissions, the total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentration and mercury deposition flux (FLX) for unit emissions reduction. From 2013 to 2017, China’s mercury emissions decreased from 571 to 444 tons, resulting in a 0.29 ng m–3 decrease in the TGM concentration, on average, and in a 17 μg m–2 yr–1 decrease in FLX. Ultralow emission renovations of coal-fired power plants are identified as the most effective emission abatement measure. As a result of this successful measure, coal-fired power plants are no longer the main mercury emitters. In 2017, the cement clinker sector became the largest emitter due to the use of less effective mercury removal measures. However, in terms of the mitigated TGM concentration and FLX levels per unit emission abatement, newly built wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) systems in coal-fired industrial boilers have become particularly effective in decreasing FLX levels. Therefore, to effectively reduce atmospheric mercury pollution in China, prioritizing mercury emissions control of cement clinkers and coal-fired industrial boilers is recommended.

2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus identified as the cause of the outbreak of pneumonia first detected in Wuhan, China. Investigations on the transmissibility, severity, and other features associated with this virus are ongoing. Currently, there is no vaccine or therapeutic antibody to prevent the infection, and more time is required to develop an effective immune strategy against the pathogen. In contrast, specific inhibitors targeting the key protease involved in replication and proliferation of the virus are the most effective means to alleviate the epidemic. The main protease of SARS-CoV is essential for the life cycle of the virus, which showed 96.1% of similarity with the main proteaseof 2019-nCoV, is considered to be an attractive target for drug development. In this study, we have identified 4 small molecular drugs with high binding capacity with SARS-CoV main protease by high-throughput screening based on the 8,000 clinical drug libraries, all these drugs have been widely used in clinical applications with guaranteed safety, which may serve as promising candidates to treat the infection of 2019-nCoV.

Background:In 2013, China released the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (Action Plan), which set the roadmap for national air pollution control actions for the period of 2013 to 2017. A decrease in the fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5μm (PM2.5) concentration may lead to a substantial benefit for human health.Objective:We aimed to quantify the relative contributions four factors: emission reductions, changed meteorology, population growth, and a change in baseline mortality rates to the reduced PM2.5-related mortality (PM2.5-mortality) during the 2013–2017 period and evaluate the importance of emission controls for human health protection in China.Methods:The integrated exposure–response function was adopted to estimate the chronic health effects of PM2.5. The annual PM2.5 concentrations were estimated from chemical transport model simulations combined with surface observations for 2013 and 2017. Relative contributions to PM2.5-mortality from emission reductions and the three factors were individually quantified through scenario analysis.Results:The estimated total PM2.5-mortality in China was 1.389 million [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.005 million, 1.631 million] in 2013 but was substantially reduced to 1.102 million (95% CI: 0.755 million, 1.337 million) in 2017. Emission controls contributed 88.7% to this reduction in PM2.5-mortality, while changed meteorology, the change in baseline mortality rates, and population growth during 2013–2017 contributed 9.6, 3.8, and −2.2%, respectively.Conclusions:The implementation of the Action Plan has significantly reduced the PM2.5 concentration in regions of China where population density is high, dominating the decline in PM2.5-mortality during 2013–2017. However, the health burden of PM2.5 pollution in China is still extremely high compared with that in other developed countries. As the largest coal consumer in China, the coal-fired power plants have come under increasing public concern in regard to atmospheric mercury pollution. This study developed an up-to-date and high-resolution mercury emission inventory of Chinese coal-fired power plants using a unit-based method that combined data from individual power plants, provincial coal characteristics, and industry removal efficiencies. National mercury emissions in 2015 were estimated at 73 tons, including 54 tons of elemental mercury, 18 tons of gaseous oxidized mercury and 1 ton of particle-bound mercury. Pulverized coal boilers emitted 65 tons, mainly in the coastal provinces and coal-electricity bases. Circulating fluidized bed boilers emitted 8 tons, mainly in Inner Mongolia and Shanxi Province. The average mercury emission intensity over the Chinese mainland was 18.3 g/GWh, which was similar to the limit for low-rank coal-fired units in the United States. The overall uncertainty of national mercury emission was estimated to be -19% to 20%, with the mercury content in coal being the major contributor. In most provinces, monthly mercury emissions generally peaked in December and August. However, monthly partition coefficients of southwest China were obviously lower than other regions from June to October due to the high proportion of hydropower generation.

Coal-fired power plants are the important sources of anthropogenic atmospheric releases of various hazardous trace elements (HTE) because a large quantity of emissions can cause wide dispersion and possible long-distance transportation. To obtain the temporal trends and spatial variation characteristics of various HTE discharged from coal-fired power plants of China, a multiple-year comprehensive emission inventory of HTE including Hg, As, Se, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Sb has been established for the period 2000-2010. Thanks to the cobenefit removal effects of conventional particulate matter/sulfur dioxide/nitrogen oxides (PM/SO2/NOx) control devices, emissions of these 8 toxic elements have shown a gradual decline since the peak in 2006. The total emissions of Hg, As, Se, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Sb are substantial and are estimated at about 118.54, 335.45, 459.4, 705.45, 13.34, 505.03, 446.42, and 82.33 tons (t), respectively, in 2010. Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanxi, and Hebei always rank among the top ten provinces with the highest emissions. Further, future emissions for 2015 and 2020 are projected with scenario analysis. Advanced technologies and integrated management strategies to control HTE are in great need.
