Developing the Sustainable Design with PtD Using 3D/4D BIM Tools

Abstract: While it comes to "Sustainable design", it's usually defined by the concepts like energy consumption optimization, natural sources utilization and environmental protection. Despite of designers focus on these requirements, the financial issues could also affect the sustainability of a design. When a worker injured or dead, it has a direct effect on the financial aspect of the sustainable design beside it is obviously in contradiction to the green design principals. So it may provide a design with the most sust… Show more

“…BIM benefits the fields of engineering and construction in the following respects: At the design stage, BIM provides a 3D visualization technique. Designers can show the full building more intuitively and achieve a professional collaborative design, which can be used for collision tests, scheme comparisons, energy consumption analyses, and so on [1113]. In the project construction phase, 4D construction management (time analysis) allows for an integrated dynamic visualization.…”

“…The construction industry remains one of the most hazardous industries in the world. It is believed that most accidents in construction can be prevented if addressed during the design phase of projects [1], and under this premise, the concept of prevention through design (PtD) has gained popularity and traction, with designers playing an important role in the identification of potential risks occurring during the construction, operation, maintenance, or disposal of facilities. Interest in PtD has increased as building information modelling (BIM) technologies have matured, with BIM being increasingly adopted by designers and other construction professionals in the United Kingdom (UK) and around the world [2].…”

“…From a fatality perspective, construction accounted for 40 fatal injuries to workers in 2019/20; the cost of occupational injuries and new cases of occupational ill health being estimated at £1.2 billion [1]. Whilst improving safety can broadly be divided into the pre-construction and in-construction phase [2], it is acknowledged that pre-construction approaches can reduce risks involved in construction, operation and maintenance: many accidents being predictable and preventable during design, if appropriate approaches, tools and technologies are utilized [3][4][5]. Designers can therefore play a significant role in accident reduction [6].…”
