Trails and routes are increasingly ubiquitous features within the tourism landscape and although their role and usefulness as applied tourism products has been analysed, they remain undertheorized within the academic literature. This article addresses this gap by exploring the role of trails within the socio-cultural construction of space. In particular, the potential function of trails in creating themed, static spaces is analysed and the concept of museumisation is employed to further illustrate the capacity of trails to reconfigure spaces within specific cultural framings which may exclude local identity and yet are consumed by the unquestioning visitor. However, the article goes on to use more recent paradigms such as tourism's performance turn and the associated concept of embodiment to further explore the trail's potency in promoting a more engaged, multi-vocal and sensory experience of place. Using these contemporary approaches to the role of the tourist and the cultural construction of place, the article employs a range of examples to argue for the efficacy of trails as flexible, interpretive tools that allow a multiplicity of stories to be told and encourage visitors towards a more engaged interaction within the spaces through which they tour.

Interpretation of Value Advantage and Sustainable Tourism Development for Railway Heritage in China Based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process

Railway heritage (RH) conservation protects significant industrial culture and can be instrumental in revitalizing post-industrial economies. China has abundant RH resources needing conservation to ensure their long-term survival. The purpose of this study was to define the value of RH based on an improved value evaluation system, discuss how the results influence RH tourism, and provide proposals for sustainable tourism accordingly. Firstly, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to evaluate the value of six RH sites from China’s First Industrial Heritage List. Then, the value advantages of the RH sites were analyzed by making comparisons among the six in the view of sustainable development, and the correlative details were interpreted to demonstrate the strengths and advantages of each resource. Finally, recommendations for RH tourism development were put forward based on these value advantages. The findings indicate that analyzing value advantages among similar resources in a competitive setting strengthens conservation and development decisions. Thus, balanced and sustainable development of RH tourism can be accomplished.

Потпуно искоришћавање културно-историјских туристичких потенцијала и атрактивности неретко подразумева израду културне туре. Циљ једне такве туре је да обједини све културно-историјске вредности и презентује јединствену туристичку понуду. У овом раду истраживано је културно-историјско наслеђе града Пожаревца, које се може имплементирати у обједињену културну туру и на тај начин унапредити културни туризам овог града. Постављена хипотеза у раду јесте могућност културне туре да унапреди културни туризам у Пожаревцу. Методолошки приступ је подразумевао примену модела за евалуацију културне руте, те је реализован детаљан аналитички преглед свих туристичких вредности и потенцијала. Резултати истраживања су показали да је могуће укључити културно-историјско наслеђе у потенцијалну културну туру, као и да сама тура може бити круцијална за унапређење културног туризма града Пожаревца. Кључне речи: култура, туризам, Пожаревац, културна тура.Abstract: Culture tourism represents a significant part of the tourist market, and as such, it includes a wide spectrum of cultural and historic values, that possess efficient tourism properties for tourist traffic and tourism income. The complete use of cultural and historic tourism potentials and attractions often include the development of cultural tour. The goal of cultural tour is to combine all cultural and historic values and present them as one unique tourism offer. The cultural-historic heritage of Požarevac, which can be implemented in the cultural tour and thus advance culture tourism in this city, was evaluated and explored in this paper. Established hypothesis is that there are possibilities of advancing culture tourism in Požarevac, by implementing the cultural tour. Methodological approach consists of Cultural Route Evaluation Model (CREM), thus the detailed analysis on all tourism values and potentials was realised. The results show that it is possible to engage cultural-historic heritage in potential cultural tour and that the tour itself can be crucial for culture tourism advancement of Požarevac city.
