Developing a new super-efficiency DEA model in the presence of both zero data and stochastic data: a case study in the Iranian airline industry

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study is to propose a novel super-efficiency DEA model to appraise the relative efficiency of DMUs with zero data and stochastic data. Our model can work with both variable returns to scale (VRS) and constant returns to scale (CRS).Design/methodology/approachThis study proposes a new stochastic super-efficiency DEA (SSDEA) model to assess the performance of airlines with stochastic and zero inputs and outputs.FindingsThis paper proposes a new analysis and contribution to the knowledg… Show more

“…For the first time stochastic data in DEA discussed by Sengupta (1982) by considering stochastic inputs and outputs in measuring efficiency. Over the last decade some scholars have addressed stochastic data in DEA such as Azadi and Farzipoor Saen (2011), Kaffash and Marra (2017), Tavassoli et al (2020), Hosseini et al (2021), and.…”

“…Given Model (12), one can calculate the GMPI for an RM in the presence of stochastic data. Note that, for α=0.5, we have 𝛷 −1 (𝛼) = 0, which is equivalent to the deterministic Model (9).…”

“…A variety of methods had been applied to research airline efficiency, such as the TOPSIS method (Barros and Wanke 2015 ; Bae et al 2021 ), factor analysis (Siregar and Norsworthy 2001 ; Barbot et al 2008 ; Pappachan 2020 ); stochastic frontier analysis (SFA), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) method (Bhadra 2009 ; Ouellette et al 2010 ; Tavassoli et al 2021 ). The SFA and DEA models have advantages in calculating a single efficiency index with multiple inputs and outputs, which can be identified as a benchmark for decision-making units (DMUs).…”
