Developing a municipality typology for modelling decentralised energy systems

Abstract: The recent rapid expansion of renewable energy capacities in Germany has been dominated by decentralised wind, photovoltaic (PV) and bioenergy plants. The spatially disperse and partly unpredictable nature of these resources necessitates an increasing exploitation of integration measures such as curtailment, supply and demand side flexibilities, network strengthening and storage capacities. Indeed, one solution to the large-scale integration of renewable energies could be decentralised autonomous municipal ene… Show more

“…In advance of illustrating the applied control approaches in the publications, we aim for a better understanding of the subject of the publications regarding the control of heat pumps. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis using quantitative methods, analogous e.g., to [25]. We analyzed the publications in the Elsevier Scopus database with the search query 'heat pump control' in title in more detail.…”

“…Another clustering approach, a model-based clustering, is applied in [24] to the countries in the European Union evaluating their historical development of the energy mix. [25] uses 59 indicators to cluster 11,131 municipalities within Germany as a preparation to model decentral energy systems using the Ward's method. In [26] countries are not directly clustered, but typical countries that describe different types of energy systems are analyzed.…”

“…We recently grouped the 11,131 German municipalities with regard to their suitability for decentralised energy 6 . The cluster analysis included 38 socio-energetic indicators which comprised data on the energy consumption sectors “Private Households” and “Transport” as well as data to estimate the potential for renewable energies.…”

“…The cluster analysis included 38 socio-energetic indicators which comprised data on the energy consumption sectors “Private Households” and “Transport” as well as data to estimate the potential for renewable energies. Among the data on renewable energies are spatial high-resolution photovoltaic 7 , wind 8 and hydrothermal 6 potentials. The hereby-published dataset contains all indicators and the resulting cluster composition for all German municipalities.…”
