Developing a European pest risk mapping system1

Abstract: Following the 1993 World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement, pest risk analyses (PRAs) must now follow internationally agreed standards. However, the international PRA standards under development provide little detailed guidance on the most complex areas of PRA: the assessment of introduction potential and economic impact. This is particularly difficult when a large area, such as Europe, with a wide variety of climatic zones and crop agroecosystems is being studied. This paper shows that the datasets required … Show more

“…Use of this tool has increased in popularity as global climate and species occurrence databases improve and expand (135). An empirical "bioclimate envelope" of the pathogen's environmental requirements is derived based on its current distribution, and long-term climate databases are then used to identify which geographical locations meet these requirements (8). Popular software tools include Climex (172,173,174), FloraMap (82) , e.g., the absence of efficient vectors or susceptible hosts.…”
