Analytical solutions are often adopted as a model of the RTD and a broad spectrum of models from many disciplines has been applied. Although these solutions are typically reduced in dimensionality and limited in complexity, their ease of use makes them preferred tools, specifically for the interpretation of tracer data. Our review begins with the mechanistic basis for the governing equations, highlighting the physics for generating a RTD, and a catalog of analytical solutions follows. This catalog explains the geometry, boundary conditions and physical aspects of the hydrologic systems, as well as the sampling conditions, that altogether give rise to specific RTDs. The similarities between models are noted, as are the appropriate conditions for their applicability. The presentation of simple solutions is followed by a presentation of more complicated analytical models for RTDs, including serial and parallel combinations, lagged systems, and non-Fickian models. The conditions for the appropriate use of analytical solutions are discussed, and we close with some thoughts on potential applications, alternative approaches, and future directions for modeling hydrologic residence time.

Generally this means that the observations relate to the movement of the center of a discrete plume, movement of position along a plume front selected to correct for the effects of dispersion and reactions not simulated by particle tracking, geochemical data that identify likely recharge areas, and other hydrologic features.MODPATH-OBS uses the particle tracking capabilities of MODPATH by acting as a postprocessor. MODPATH is a postprocessor for MODFLOW, so that the sequence of model runs generally required is MODFLOW, MODPATH, and MODPATH-OBS.The versions of MODFLOW and MODPATH that support MODPATH-OBS as documented in this report are MODFLOW-2000/2005 and MODFLOW-LGR (Mehl and Hill, 2005 and MODPATH (Pollock, 1994(Pollock, , 2012 or MODPATH-LGR (Dickinson and others, 2011). MODFLOW-LGR is derived from MODFLOW-2005(Harbaugh, 2005 and supports local grid refinement. MODFLOW-LGR simulations may include local grid refinement or may use a single grid. When a single grid is used, MODFLOW-LGR performs identically to the version of MODFLOW-2005 cited on the MODFLOW-LGR web page. MODPATH-LGR and MODPATH-OBS can use nearly all of the capabilities of MODFLOW-LGR. Water residence time provides a fundamental characterization to a hydrologic system and conceptually describes storage. Residence time is often used to supplement or validate hydrologic models of catchments and groundwater systems. Water residence time also has important implications for water quality because many chemical reactions in the environment are time‐dependent. In this chapter, lumped parameter modeling approaches are described to estimate water residence times using environmental tracers. Environmental tracer methods for stable isotopes ( 18 O and 2 H) and radioactive isotopes ( 3 H) of water and dissolved gas tracers ( 3 He, CFCs, and 85 Kr) are introduced for residence time determination in aquifers and catchments.
