Determining the cost-effectiveness of hospital nursing interventions for patients undergoing a total hip replacement

Abstract: It is important for nurse administrators to support nurses' clear documentation in order to make nursing information available. Utilizing study methods and findings, nurse managers can compare the cost-effectiveness of new nursing interventions or manage dosages of nursing interventions to provide the most cost-effective nursing interventions.

“…The decrease in the occurrence of incidents directly impacts the reduction of institutional costs by reducing treatment with the damages (8,17) . Therefore, research into the cost of nursing care required and available, and the adequate number of professionals to adjust between patient demands and Unit availability, allows developing strategies for managing the cost of nursing care for patient supervision and safety.…”

“…Other evidence has also identified an estimated institutional cost increase of between $ 300-15 billion per year related to the handling of incidents and damage caused by the heavy workload, which makes it difficult to supervise patients (17) . In addition, the high workload increases turnover, the need for overtime and the hiring of new professionals to meet the demands, also impacting the increase in costs (3,8) . These results reinforce the importance of the adequacy of the number of nursing professionals in the Unit for patient safety, workload management and care costs (17) .…”

“…With specific data on time to perform nursing interventions, the cost of nursing interventions can be measured and nursing's contribution to patient care can be recognized. In addition, identifying the time needed to perform an intervention can be used as an alternative to using a patient classification system for this purpose (Bensink et al, 2013;Lee et al, 2013). A total of 92 nursing interventions were analyzed in this study.…”

“…It is important for nursing researchers and executives to gather data about the time needed to perform nursing interventions in Korea, since these data provide information that helps determine the nursing staffing levels and skill mix that are associated with optimal patient outcomes (Twigg, Duffield, Bremner, Rapley, & Finn, 2012). The estimated average time to perform these interventions is fundamental data that can also be used to determine reimbursement rates (Bulechek, Butcher, Dochterman, & Wagner, 2013) and identify more cost-effective and efficient nursing interventions (Bulechek, Dochterman, & Butcher, 2008;Dochterman et al, 2001;Lee, Moorhead, & Clancy, 2013). McCloskey and Bulechek (2000) discuss how identifying the interventions that nurses perform using the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) system is the first step to determining the most cost-effective nursing interventions.…”
