Determining the 2-Dimensional Threshold for Perception of Artificial-Appearing Lips

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Recognizing the perceptual threshold for artificial-appearing lips is important to avoid an undesirable outcome of treatment. OBJECTIVE To characterize the quantitative measurements for the perceptual threshold of artificial-and unnatural-appearing lips. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Photographs of a female model's lips were digitally altered incrementally in 5 sets of features (the upper lip, lower lip, upper and lower lips, and shape of the Cupid's bow). From December 1, 2013, to January 30, 2… Show more

“… 33 In aged lips, we proceed as in thin lips, but we also inject HA into the vertical upper lip lines in a particularly modest manner to avoid distortions. Moreover, each target group has different reasons for undergoing this cosmetic procedure, and the injector should take these into consideration to better educate the patients, manage their expectations 2 , 6 , 21 and set accordingly their aesthetic goals. 21 , 34 …”

“…In each marking point, it is advised to inject no more than 0.05–0.1 ml of HA, and in each session, the maximum amount of HA should be no more than 1–1.5 ml. 6 These 2 measures of quantity could allow the tissues, especially in thin and aged lips, to gradually “expand” and provide space for the HA to settle. 21 The filler proper adjustment provides natural lip movements and an overall natural appearance to the lips, but prevents premature lip philtrum prolongation.…”

“…Studies reveal that asymmetries of even 0.3 mm are identified and undesirable in this area. 7 For the lower lip, excision can be done either within the mouth along the wet part of the lip or along the vermilion border.…”

“…A recent study found that there was a measurable difference in perceptual thresholds for overtreated and artificial lips between people of different age groups. 10 It is imperative to determine if the patient has realistic goals and expectations of what can be achieved. Several patients have lips that are extremely thin, with little subcutaneous tissue and potential space to accommodate filler; these patients should be counseled that sometimes only subtle enhancement is possible, to avoid potential disappointment.…”
