Determining paths of innovation: The role of culture on the adoption on organic farming management

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to understand whether national culture is linked with operative performance of organic agriculture. The ultimate goal is, indeed, to measure the impact of social change on technical innovation and sustainability issues. We built an econometric model where the impact of some of the six dimensions of national culture by Geert Hofstede is tested on inputs and outputs of organic production, on a country‐based scale. “…Nevertheless, there are still several obstacles that slow down the implementation of sustainable practices that are useful for the ecological transition (Manta et al 2022). Among them, development and technology transfer capacity and an attitude of resistance of farmers themselves to innovations appear to be the most relevant obstacles (Niggli et al 2017).…”

“…In particular, culture affects individual concerns about values (Hofstede et al, 2010), managers' attitudes toward rules and self‐interest (Okpara, 2014), and subordinates' submission and loyalty (Patel et al, 2002). These differences result in different sustainable consumption demands (Manta et al, 2022), management styles (Ardichvili & Kuchinke, 2002; Manta et al, 2023; Westerman et al, 2007), corporate strategies focused on long‐ or short‐term interests (Peng & Zhang, 2022), and definitions of business success (Luo & Tang, 2022). The stakeholders' demands also differ according to cultural backgrounds (Ringov & Zollo, 2007).…”
