Determining elemental strontium distribution in rat bones treated with strontium ranelate and strontium citrate using 2D micro‐XRF and 3D dual energy K‐edge subtraction synchrotron imaging

Abstract: Strontium-based medications, such as strontium ranelate, have been suggested to have therapeutic effects in patients with osteoporosis. Strontium salts available off-shelf in stores across North America are assumed to provide similar effects as strontium ranelate and thus should lead to similar distributions of elemental strontium incorporated in bone. The objective of this study was to compare the spatial distribution of strontium in animal bones following the administration of strontium ranelate and strontiu… Show more

“…115 Previously, strontium was mapped using 2D micro-XRF and 3D dual energy K-edge subtraction in humeral heads of rats and results showed heterogeneous deposition of strontium throughout the humerus with significant deposition at the epiphyseal plate. 116 This suggests that there is substantial deposition in regions of bone formation, which could also be the case for La.…”

“…Strontium nanoparticles (Sr-NPs) are spherical or flake metal particles with a specific surface area of 30-60 m 2 /g in a size range of 10-200 nm. Sr-NPs are used either in bone regeneration to improve the mechanical and biological properties of diverse polymers and metal alloys [171,172] or encapsulated as inorganic nanocarriers in drug delivery and biomedical imaging [173,174].…”
