Determining Cognitive Structures and Alternative Conceptions on the Concept of Reproduction (The Case of Pre-Service Biology Teachers)

Abstract:

Reproduction is among basic functions of living beings and one of elementary complex subjects of the biology course. This is complicated for learners to construct cognitive structures on the subject. The aim of the current study is to investigate pre-service biology teachers’ cognitive structures related to “reproduction” through the free word-association test and the drawing-writing technique. As the research design of the study, the qualitative research method was applied. The data were c… Show more

“…Analysis of the relatedness coefficients between keywords: While determining students' cognitive structure, besides the number of students' responses, it is also important to put forward the relations between concepts in the students' cognitive structures Kurt et al, 2013;Shavelson, 1974a). In a WAT, number of overlapping responses, and rank order of these responses are indicators of the semantic proximity of the keywords (Shavelson, 1974a;Bahar et al, 1999).…”

“…This shall cause the test to be beyond its purpose (Bahar & Ozatlı, 2003). It is determined that to give 45 seconds to the students for each concept shall be the most appropriate time zone by evaluating the previous studies (Bahar & Kılıç, 2001;Bahar & Ozatlı, 2003;Çardak, 2009;Dikmenli, 2010a;Dikmenli, 2010b;Ercan et al, 2010;Isıklı et al, 2011;Aydın & Tasar, 2010;Koseoğlu & Bayır, 2011;Nakiboglu, 2008;Ozatlı & Bahar, 2010;Timur & Taşar, 2011;Torkar & Bajd, 2006;Kurt & Ekici, 2013). “…The reliability of data was calculated from the formula [agreements / (agreements + disagreements) x 100] (Miles & Huberman, 1994 as cited in Kurt, Ekici, Aksu, & Aktaş, 2013). The main researcher of the study first coded the students' responses for each question according to the previously stated categories.…”
