Determining Characteristic Sand Shear Parameters of Strength via a Direct Shear Test

Abstract: The article considers the peculiarities of determining quartz sand shear strength according to the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion, via a direct shear test and that of factors influencing the characteristic angle of internal friction and cohesion values of the obtained strength parameters. The air-dry sand of the Baltic Sea region from Lithuanian coastal area near Klaipėda city has been analyzed. The solid density of the investigated sand grains was ρs = 2.65 g/cm3. The initial density of the tested samples ma… Show more

“…However, processing data on 2-4 tests end in the large distribution of strength properties, which finally results in a significant reduction of characteristic shear strength parameters [39]. Such quantity of tests allows avoiding the influence of the magnitude factor of the vertical load, for determining shear strength parameters [40].…”

“…Pavyzdžiui, atliekant nesankabių gruntų bandymus su didėjančiomis apkrovomis, purių gruntų vidinės trinties kampas didėja, o tankių -mažėja (Ghazavi et al, 2008;Bareither et al, 2008). Taip pat grunto mechaninių savybių verčių patikimumas priklauso nuo bandymų kiekio (Skuodis et al, 2016).…”

“…The mechanical behavior and properties of dry loose quartz sand are characterized by several types of experiments such as the direct shear test [25], uniaxial compression test [28], and the triaxial test [21,26,27]. The triaxial test is used to obtain the shear strength of a sample in the principal axes under confining pressure.…”
