Determination of α S using OPAL hadronic event shapes at $\sqrt{s} = 91\mbox{--}209~\mathrm{GeV}$ and resummed NNLO calculations

Abstract: Hadronic event shape distributions from e + e − annihilation measured by the OPAL experiment at centre-ofmass energies between 91 GeV and 209 GeV are used to determine the strong coupling α S . The results are based on QCD predictions complete to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), and on NNLO calculations matched to the resummed next-to-leading-log-approximation terms (NNLO+ NLLA). The combined NNLO result from all variables and centre-of-mass energies is The completeness of the NNLO and NNLO + NLLA res… Show more

“…The experimental systematics are well understood. By comparing with the experimental results on the α s (M Z ) measurement [44,45], we found the sensitivity obtained in this study is realistic. Even after all the experimental systematics are included, the expected exclusion limit should not change greatly.…”

“…This can be briefly compared to previous estimations obtained with Monte Carlo event generator models in similar analyses. Namely, the values 0.001 [67,69] and 0.0005 [71] obtained previously allow us to validate our estimation. We stress that we have not performed any tuning of the adopted hadronization models to the data in order to artificially reduce the related uncertainties.…”

“…The antenna functions are derived systematically from physical matrix elements [47][48][49]. This formalism has been applied in the derivation of NNLO corrections to three-jet production in electron-positron annihilation [50][51][52][53][54] and related event shapes [55][56][57][58][59], which were used subsequently in precision determinations of the strong coupling constant [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70]. The formalism can be extended to include massive fermions [71][72][73][74].…”
