Determination of Total Polyphenol, Flavonoid and Anthocyanin Contents and Antioxidant Capacities of Skins From Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea) Lines With Different Skin Colors

Abstract: Peanut skins are a good source of polyphenols, which are a major source of dietary antioxidants. Therefore, the consumption of whole peanut seeds, including the skin, has been recommended by nutritional authorities. Here, the polyphenol contents of the skins of 22 experimental line, varying in skin color, and four Israeli cultivars were examined. The total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC), total anthocyanin (TAC) contents and antioxidant capacity (AOC) of isolated skins were measured. Whereas significantl… Show more

“…Studies on peanut flavonoids, however, have so far focused on the flavonoid types found in seeds (Wang et al 2008), the variation in the range of flavonoid contents, and the relationship between flavonoid content and seed-coat color (Wang et al 2013, Chukwumah et al 2009, Yoav et al 2012). High quality is important for cultivar breeding, at the same time yield and resistant traits are also major factors in breeding research.…”

“…This relatively rapid extraction time may also reduce the risk of altering the chemical composition of the extract and contribute to energy savings [19]. In another study it was determined that a longer extraction time could increase the possibility of chemical alteration of the compounds of interest and this, in turn, would reduce the extraction yield [18].…”

“…Since these variables have a positive effect, the highest percentage of methanol and solvent-to-sample ratio in the studied range (+1) were defined as the best solvent conditions. Mixtures of methanol and water have proven to be efficient in extracting resveratrol from food samples [16,17] and in some cases an increase in the solvent-to-sample ratio can improve the extraction efficiency [18]. Since the design includes the highest level (+1) for the maximum solvent composition, the proportion of methanol in water was then examined at levels higher than those in the studied range (>70% methanol) for further optimization.…”

“…Peanuts are a good source of niacin, folate, fiber, vitamin E, magnesium and phosphorus [6]. Peanuts contain antioxidants, phenolics and other phytochemicals that protect against cancer, coronary heart diseases, degenerative nerve disease, Alzheimer's disease, and viral/fungal infections [3,16,18,19].…”
