Determination of the Tenth and Half Value Layer Thickness of Concretes with Different Densities

Abstract: Half value layer (HVL) is the most frequently used quantitative factor for describing both the penetrating ability of specific radiations and the penetration through specific objects. The half value layers (HVL) and tenth value layers (TVL) are defined as the thickness of a shield or an absorber that reduces the radiation level by a factor of one-half and one tenth of the initial level, respectively. The concepts of HVL and TVL are widely used in shielding design. They are photon energy dependent, like the att… Show more

“…Equation 1was used in the calculation of linear absorption coefficient and results were obtained according to the properties of the absorber material. The half value layer (HVL) [11,12] is the material thickness required to reduce the intensity of the beam interacting with the material in half. One-tenth (1/10) value layer (TVL) is the material thickness required to reduce the intensity of the beam interacting with the material to 1/10 [12,13].…”

“…The reliability in these experimental measurements could be realized from their good agreements with those determined by utilizing the XCOM program for the same composites loaded with the same percentage of nano oxides. The half-value layer (HVL) is one of the important shielding parameters besides the attenuation coefficient, so the work is extended to calculate the HVL values for the different samples according to the simple equation [29].…”
