Determination of the level of sustainable development of the cities - a proposal for a method of classifying objects based on natural breaks

Abstract: Motives: The problem of measuring the level of sustainable development is a subject addressed by many authors in their research. Aim: In this article the Authors proposed a new method of classifying objects based on Jenks’ Natural Breaks to measure the level of sustainable development. The analysis was carried out on the basis of the data obtained from Statistics Poland. An important element of the research was the development of the process of selection and rejection of input data on the basis of a variety of… Show more

“…From the perspective of the overall value, the CVS in Wuchang is distributed within the range of [0.018, 0.728], and the mean is 0.251. By calculating the Goodness of Variance Fit ( 87 , 88 ) (GVF) of the CVS, it can be known that when the number of classifications is equal to 9, it is the inflection point of the GVF curve ( 89 ). Therefore, this study uses the natural breaks method in ArcGIS to divide the CVS into 9 categories.…”

“…Data grading The 23-index data of the counties in Henan Province are used as the input of the BP model. According to the maximum and minimum intervals of the sample data, Natural Breaks (NB) [22] is adopted to divide the data sample into five levels. Among them, 1 represents a high level of comprehensive economic development, 2 represents a medium-to-high level, 3 represents a medium level, 4 represents a medium-low level, and 5 represents a low level.…”

“…The class selection was carried out using the Jenks natural breaks method. This method is one of the most popular data classification methods [85,121,122]; it is used to reduce the variance within classes and to maximize the variance between classes. The comparison of the content of the maps is only possible if equal classification (division into classes) is used [123].…”
