Determination of the Hansen Solubility Parameters of Vegetable Oils, Biodiesel, Diesel, and Biodiesel–Diesel Blends

Abstract: The search for alternative fuels has been gaining attention in recent decades. The replacement of fossil fuels is driven by environmental, economic, and social factors, since the whole of society is dependent on their usage; and in this context, one alternative that has been highlighted is the use of biodiesel. Biodiesel represents a renewable, biodegradable, non‐inflammable, and low toxicity alternative to diesel. In this study, the Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) and the interaction radii (R0) were deter… Show more

“…However, OCMT mainly uses used frying oil, for which it is difficult to estimate HSPs because used frying oil is a mixture of various oils and fats. However, HSP estimates of used frying oil, based on experiments, were obtained by Batista et al [16]. The values were found to be δ d = 15.35, δ p = 3.77, and δ h = 6.87, which are not significantly different from the fatty acids used in the evaluation of this study (Table 4).…”

“…The determination of Hansen's parameters was executed with 48 different analytical degree solvents as shown in Table 1. Solvent-oil samples in a 9:1 ratio were placed in duplicate test tubes and shaken for 24 hours at 30 0 C and then allowed to rest 72 h for a visual inspection of the presence of phase separation (Batista et al, 2015).…”

“…There are only a few studies in which Hansen's solubility theory was used as a tool to determine the HSPs of vegetable oils to know which would be the most suitable solvent for these oils. Batista et al, (2015) determined the HSPs of used frying oil, coconut oil, palm oil and biodiesel. They confirmed that used frying oil and biodiesel-diesel blends were feasible alternatives that could be used as additives for diesel fuel.…”

“…FAME /methanol with the same total Hildebrand value should also exhibit similar solubility behaviour towards SG. The Hildebrand solubility of the reacted ester phase was determined using methanol and catalyst phase partitioning data (Batista et al, 2015) and plotted as shown in Figure 6. Table 1 lists the Hildebrand solubility parameter values for pure methanol, acetone, and FAME.…”
