Determination of the Chemical Composition of Avocado (Persea Americana) Seed

Abstract: Introduction: This research work was carried out to determine chemical components of Persea americana seed. Persea americana (avocado) is widely grown fruit in parts of South East, Nigeria, where it is used as a medicinal plant in the treatment of several ailments by alternative medical practitioners. Materials and Methods: The chemical components of Persea americana seed includes the proximate and minor components. The fleshy part of the fruit was removed to obtain the seed. The dried seeds were ground to pow… Show more

“…This implies that it is an oil fruit and the dietary fat quality can exert a protective effect on cardiovascular diseases. The consumption of foods rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), dietary fibers, and antioxidants has been associated with lipid profile improvement and body weight loss as reported by Silva Caldas et al (2017) The protein contents of the samples investigated ranged from 1.62±0.09 to 19.94±1.40% in fruit which was quite higher than 15.55±0.36 as reported by Ejiofor et al (2018). Apart from contributing to diets, the relative impact of proteins in body system should not be neglected, this is because they replace and repair worn out tissues, form the body's structural materials, blood proteins, improve immune system (Olusanya, 2008).…”

“…The species belong to the Lauraceae family. P. americana is one of the over 150 varieties of pear and avocado (Ejiofor et al, 2018). It is now being cultivated in the subtropical and tropical areas such as East and West Africa respectively.…”

“…However, these values are still in range with other studies by Dantas et al (2018) on avocado pulp and Goula and Adamopoulos (2008) on tomato pulp [2,12]. This phenomenon might be caused by the high macromolecule content of avocado seeds [34]. In macromolecules, such as proteins or carbohydrate, hydrogen bonds can be formed that cause water molecules to be built in the structure of the macromolecules.…”

“…This may be due to the high levels of soluble monosaccharides, such as glucose, that are present in red grapes pomace, favoring the fermentation process [32]. Durian seed (9.08% protein, 72.49% carbohydrate), [33] avocado seed (15.55% protein, 49.03% carbohydrate) [34] and coffee waste (17.44% protein, 24.08% glucose) [35] contains high compositions of sugars and protein. The rich source of nitrogen content provides an optimal condition for growth of Mucor circinelloides, [36], which produces chitinase to hydrolyze chitin into chitosan [37].…”
