“…For many years, separation of C. majus extracts was mostly carried out in reversed phase (RP) system using long (150 or 250 mm) C18 columns with 4.6 mm of diameter and 5 μm of particle size (Niu and He, 1994 ; Petruczynik et al, 2002 ; Kursinszki et al, 2006 ; Borghini et al, 2015 ; Paulsen et al, 2015 ; Gañán et al, 2016 ). More recently, adsorbents with smaller particles (≤ 3 μm) or shorter columns (Prosen and Pendry, 2016 ; Seidler-Łozykowska et al, 2016 ) were also applied to achieve shorter separation and saving solvents. Mobile phases are usually composed of water and acetonitrile or/and methanol with various additives e.g., ammonium formate/acetate (Borghini et al, 2015 ; Seidler-Łozykowska et al, 2016 ), organic amines (triethyl-, tetrabutylamine) (Paulsen et al, 2015 ), ion-pair reagents (sodiumdodecylsulfate, alkylsulfonic acids) (Gañán et al, 2016 ).…”

“…The herbal drug solution contained only rutin and isoquercitrin, whereas quercetin was also detected in the tincture, likely due to hydrolysis promoted by heating during the percolation extraction at 60°C. Prosen and Pendry [2] reported that quercetin was present in high concentrations in the commercial tincture, suggesting degradation of its glycosides, rutin and isoquercitrin.…”

“…Stability testing of herbal preparations and herbal medicinal products (HMPs) has recently been recognized as essential for quality control to support the shelf lives of these products, and stability testing guidelines have been made official in many countries [1,2]. However, because of the complexity and different analytical behaviors of the components, their low concentrations, and a lack of information on each marker's contribution to the biological effect, studying the stability of herbal preparations and HMPs remains difficult.…”

“…A lot of chromatographic systems for RP separation of isoquinoline alkaloids in C. majus were described in literature; however, most of them were more complicated [ 14 , 15 , 22 ] or did not provide sufficient separation for quantitative analysis [ 25 ]. Due to additional modification of endcapped octadecyl silica by isobutyl chains in the XB-C18 stationary phase, the interaction of the basic analyte with residual silanol decreased significantly.…”
