“…Recent studies of ECs around the world [15,[65][66][67][68][69][70] have reported concentration values in the EWW in the same order as those found in this paper for the Vall de Uxó WWTP (Table SI-3, Supplementary material). The main differences between the EC values for the Vall de Uxó and those from previous works might be due to different consumption patterns of the citizens and the characteristics of the processes applied in the different WWTPs.…”

“…Hydrochlorothiazide was detected at levels up to 600 ng L −1 in surface waters and 3 μg L −1 in effluent waters by Batt et al (Batt et al, 2016). This is probably due in part to high prescription amounts for hydrochlorothiazide, but also due to its reduced metabolism (for instance, excretion rate as unchanged form is in the range of 80-99%) (Stankiewicz et al, 2015). Both, salbutamol and hydrochlorothiazide, were also previously detected in fish samples at very low concentrations (<20 ng g −1 , dry weight) (Huerta et al, 2013;Moreno-González et al, 2016;Valdés et al, 2016).…”

“…Sartans are mostly excreted as parent compounds, with percentages of metabolization below 25% (Bayer et al, 2014). Consequently, they are present in urban sewage water at concentrations in the ng per mL -1 range (Bodík et al, 2016;Oosterhuis et al, 2013;Stankiewicz et al, 2015). Their mass balances in conventional sewage treatment plants (STPs), equipped with primary and activated sludge units, showed variable, yet incomplete removal efficiencies.…”
