In this paper, a new geographic information systems (GIS)-based algorithm is proposed for supporting the initial design of a wireless communications system in open-pit mines. In this algorithm, multiple candidate transmitter (wireless access point) locations are selected considering the probability of further development and environmental factors in the mine. Then, a three-dimensional (3D) partial Fresnel zone between the transmitter and the receiver is defined and its 3D Fresnel index calculated by communication viewshed analysis of topographic data. The initial design for a transmitter layout is then determined based on the 3D Fresnel indices, which are calculated for all candidate transmitter locations. The proposed algorithm was applied to an open-pit mine located in Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea. The 3D Fresnel indices were calculated for 15 candidate transmitter locations, and an initial transmitter layout then designed considering favorable combinations of two, three, and four transmitters. The proposed algorithm provided more precise Fresnel index overlay maps for the favorable transmitter candidate combinations than other algorithms based on line-of-sight and two-dimensional partial Fresnel zone analyses. Application of the algorithm to an open-pit mine where a wireless communications system is already installed revealed that the initial transmitter layout design is acceptable in terms of providing reasonable information on the coverage area of transmitters. Because the proposed algorithm provides an initial transmitter layout that can be modified after field investigations, it can support efficient design of wireless communications systems for use in open-pit mines.

Resumo-Propõe-se uma solução analítica para avaliar o impacto da propagação multipercurso sobre a cobertura de sistemas de radar operando em perfis topográficos reais. A solução proposta provê a localização de cada multipercurso entre a antena do radar e o alvo. Resultados numéricos indicam que a nova soluçãoé plenamente consistente com soluções particulares conhecidas para um perfil topográfico nulo. Além disso, no caso geral, a nova solução revela uma forte influência da topografia sobre a cobertura de sistemas de radar.Palavras-Chave-multipercurso, topografia, radar, modelo de propagação.Abstract-We propose an analytical solution to evaluate the impact of the multipath propagation on the coverage of radar systems operating over real topographical profiles. The proposed solution provides the localization of each multipath between the radar antenna and the target. Numerical results indicate that the new solution is fully consistent with known particular solutions for a null topographical profile. Also, in the general case, the new solution reveals a strong influence of the topography on the radar coverage.

Remodelling of Lee’s Knife Diffraction Loss Model as a Function of Line of Site Percentage Clearance

In this paper, remodeling of Lee's piecewise knife diffraction loss model is presented. The original Lee's piecewise knife diffraction loss model is expressed as a function of Fresnel-Kirchoff diffraction parameter. The computation of the Fresnel-Kirchoff diffraction parameter requires detailed terrain and link parameters. However, for quick link planning the Fresnel-Kirchoff diffraction parameter can be computed from the knowledge of the line of site percentage clearance alone. Moreover, in line of site link design, the required or acceptable obstruction clearance is specified in terms of line of site percentage clearance. Consequently, in this paper, the Lee's model is remodeled into new piecewise functions that are entirely functions of line of site percentage clearance. The new version of Lee's model is validated with the results of knife edge diffraction loss obtained from the original Lee's piecewise knife diffraction loss model. With the new model it is easier to determine the diffraction loss that will be caused by any obstruction at a given line of site percentage clearance.
