Determination of organic carbon in soils and fertilizers

Abstract: Many methods have been proposed to determine the total amount of organic carbon in soil; some of them determine only a percentage of the actual carbon content and therefore the results need the application of a correction factor. Methods for the determination of organic carbon in soil have been rarely extended to organic fertilizers and amendments. 759Copyright© 1989 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.

“…For all horizons it was determined: (i) active and potential soil reaction (1N KCl), exchangeable acidity (Al, H), basic characteristics of the sorption complex by Kappen (1929) (base content, hydrolytic acidity, cation exchange capacity, base saturation), (iii) total carbon content -Springer-Klee method (Ciavatta et al 1989), (iv) total nitrogen content by Kjeldahl (Kirk 1950), (v) plant available nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg) by Mehlich III (Mehlich 1984).…”

“…Electrical conductivity (EC) and pH were measured in mixtures at a 1:5 (material/water) ratio, according to the method described by Rayment and Higginson (2002). Total organic carbon (TOC) was determined using the modified Springer-Klee method (Ciavatta et al, 1989). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) was determined according to ISO 234 (2007).…”

“…TOC was determined by the K 2 Cr 2 O 7 oxidation method described by Ciavatta et al [18], TN using an elemental analyzer (Thermo Fisher Scientific) and mineral N according to the method reported by Violante [19]. Other nutrients and heavy metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES, Spectro Ciros CCD ) after digestion of the sample with 65% HNO 3 .…”
