“…This situation of "irreconcilable" datasets from the same crustacean species (see table II) is interesting and unexpected, and may be explained by inherent differences between juveniles that ecdyse several times a year and adults that ecdyse only once a year. Thus far, moult stage-specific changes have not been reported on for both developmental stages in other decapod species to substantiate or refute the observed differences encountered in the current study and that of Isaacs et al (2000). On the other hand, the differences set out in table II may simply be the result of different interpretations by the authors of setogenic events.…”

“…1. These observations are in direct agreement with those of Lyle & MacDonald (1983) who looked at setogenesis in the warm water palinurid Panulirus marginatus (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) and disagree with the observations/information put forward by Isaacs et al (2000) on juvenile /. lalandii specimens (carapace length 20-45 mm).…”

“…For each of these experiments, three collections were made at sea: during August 2002-2003 to obtain late intermoult or premoult lobsters (defined as premoults for the purposes of this study), and during November 2003 to obtain early intermoult lobsters (defined as intermoults). Moult stages of lobster were confirmed by pleopod analysis according to the methods described for this species by Isaacs et al (2000). For the in situ experiment, 6000 lobsters caught with traps from a research ship were tagged and released, 3000 at Knol and 3000 at Olifantsbos in August andSeptember 2002, andagain in 2003. Aquaria consisted of eight rectangular fibreglass tanks (2 m × 2.5 m × 1.5 m), with a continuous flowthrough system supplied by seawater pumped from an inlet offshore from the aquarium facility.…”

“…Each had substages. This general scheme has been widely adopted and applied to a variety of crustaceans, including cray sh (Stevenson et al, 1968;Mills & Lake, 1975;Peebles, 1977;Van Herp & Bellon-Humbert, 1978), lobsters (Aiken, 1973;Dall & Barclay, 1977;Lyle & MacDonald, 1983;Turnbull, 1989;Isaacs et al, 2000), and prawns (Smith & Dall, 1985).…”
