Determination of Metal Concentration in Road-Side Trees from an Industrial Area Using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Historical pollution can be elucidated with variations of elements' concentration in tree rings by using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). However, the capacity of chemical elements' absorption significantly depends on the tree species and element types. Metal concentrations in the rings for five species (Platanus occidentalis, Salix koreensis, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Pinus densiflora, Ginkgo biloba) were investigated in light of metal pollution history in ambient air of D … Show more

“…Roadside trees reduce the spread of road noise, absorb ne particles (Ozdemir 2019), harmful exhaust compounds from the air (Lahothi et al 2020; Amorim et al 2013) and de-icing salts from the soil (Ju et al 2020;Gałuszka et al 2011). Studies of metal concentrations in tree rings in industrial and roadside areas con rm the pollutant absorption capacity (Kim et al 2020). According to the public, residents of large cities appreciate the ecosystem properties of trees and other vegetation elements of roadside infrastructure.…”

“…I In addition to Cystoseiraz , inorganic As was dominant in the other nine algal species, indicating that ICP-MS and LC-ICP-MS provide reasonable technical support for further exploration of the As content in marine plants ( Pell et al., 2013 ). LA-ICP-MS detected that, except Ginkgo biloba , Pb and Cd accumulated rapidly in four tree species including Pinus densiflora , Chamaecyparis obtuse , Salix koreensis , and Platanus occidentalis , while the distribution of Fe, Cr, Mn, and other elements exhibited changes in tree-ring patterns ( Kim et al., 2020 ). This indicates that LA-ICP-MS can be employed to determine changes in levels of certain HMs in tree rings, providing valuable information and contributing to research in environmental pollution monitoring ( Kim et al., 2020 ).…”

The application of SP-ICP-MS offers a distinct opportunity to detect and study the concentration of metal particles, particle-particle and particle-matrix interactions, solubility, etc.…”

“…In 1971, summer mean precipitation was extremely low, even lower than in 1952. The year 1979 exhibits a relatively normal climate, but it is the period of peaking regional air pollution from the combustion of coal and other industrial operations(Král et al 2015;Navrátil et al 2016Navrátil et al , 2018Ponocná et al 2018;Kim et al 2020).…”
