Determination of Local Heat Transfer Coefficient Based on Bulk Mean Temperature Using a Transient Liquid Crystals Technique

Abstract: Recent advances in thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) thermography have improved its usefulness as a very effective temperature and heat transfer measurement technique. One of the approaches to determine the local heat transfer coefficient, known as the transient technique, is to monitor the temporal evolution of surface temperature in conjunction with the solution of a transient heat conduction model penetrating to the wall substrate. The local heat transfer coefficient resulted from such a transient test, by… Show more

“…Afterwards, [12,13] used the naphthalene sublimation method, based on heat-mass transfer analogy, to investigate the separate contribution of endwall and pin fin. The work in [5,6] performed detailed heat transfer measurements on the endwall surface of pedestals array with TLC transient technique.…”

“…It is interesting to compare with other researchers' results. Chyu et al (1997) studied the heat transfer enhancement around the delta winglet I U VG pair in an array. Their operating conditions (versus our operating conditions) are H/2A = 0.4 (0.12), Pi/H = 5 (10), MB = 2 (I), oval cross-section (square cross-section), and Re = 3 x 104 (1.2 x 104).…”

“…Recently, Elckad and Han (1997) reported Nusselt number distributions for a two-pass square channel with one ribbed wall using a transient liquid crystal technique. Chyu et al (1997) investigated heat transfer enhancement of ducts with multiple delta wing pair arrays by using a transient liquid crystal technique as well. In general, the transient liquid crystal technique is able to provide detailed local heat transfer distribution maps; nevertheless, its applications to study the heat augmentation associated with longitudinal vortex generators are still limited.…”
