This study aims to clarify some aspects of the growth of Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.), (ABFT) mainly regarding parameters of the growth equation and of relative growth, in this case length-weight relationships. There is a great volume of literature on these matters and there is a danger that the resulting confusion may give rise to mistaken decisions.In spite of the publication of 55 articles on absolute growth (FL > 50 cm), which contain a total of 43 growth equations, no consensus has yet been reached within the ABFT assessment group (AG) of the SCRS on parameters such as L max and L ∞ . The results of the present study indicate that the L ∞ = 314.9 cm of the growth equation used for the western stock by the AG from 2010 (Lt= 314.9 [1-e -0.089 (t + 1.13) ]), which was discarded in 2016, lies within the confidence limits of the maximum Ls presented in this study (L max = 321.4±8.7 cm), confirming that this equation fit the biology of the ABFT growth, and does so even better than that adopted in 2016 for the western stock, whose L ∞ = 271 cm is statistically different from L max . There is a similar situation with regard to the length-weight relationships. 38 articles (FL > 50 cm) have been consulted containing a total of 71 equations, but in spite of this the models adopted by the AG in 2014 underestimate the weight of spawners (> 2 m) by up to 23%.The coincidence of the length-weight model for the ABFT western stock, discarded by the AG in 2014, with that of Pacific bluefin tuna, Thunnus orientalis (T & S), (PBFT) indicates that both species must have the same growth, something that is not surprising since both were the same species until 2003. Other coincidences, such as the trend of condition factor K in adults and the growth in the first months of life, could ratify it.In the Pacific Ocean, where far fewer growth studies have been made on PBFT than on ABFT in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, the management of growth models for the purposes of stock assessment in the International Scientific Committee (ISC) makes more sense than that carried out by the SCRS on this matter.

Geometric morphometric methods were used to explore body shape morphology in 260 Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, collected in Sardinia (Western Mediterranean) during the breeding phase and in the Bay of Biscay (North Eastern Atlantic) during the feeding phase. The shape of each specimen was captured by high resolution digital images and recording the 2-D coordinates of seven morphological landmarks. A general procruste analysis (GPA) was applied in order to eliminate any morphological variations resulting from size, position or orientation of specimens. A thin plate-spline (TPS) method was then used to provide a graphical representation of the shape conformation between two sets of data. Results of the regression model between the direct and indirect measurements accounted for a R2 = 0.98. The Principal Components Analysis shows differences linked to the two sampling areas, accounting for 37% and 19.97% of the body shape variation in the first (PC1) and second (PC2) principal component, respectively. Specifically, the deformation grid projection highlights the major differences regarding the anterior-ventral part of the body (landmark 5-6-7). These differences might not necessarily be linked to an actual population substructure. Instead, it was hypothesized that such body shape differences were due to the diverse life phases during which specimens were collected, since the reproductive specimens show a 'potbellied' shape, which was larger than for the feeding specimens that showed a 'slimmer' shape. Analyses of likely sexual dimorphism conducted on Sardinian specimens did not reveal any significant differences; whereas body shape differences related to the pre- and post-reproductive sizes were detected

A brief description is made of the Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.), from the point of view of its biology, geographic distribution and population dynamic. With the Strait of Gibraltar traps as a reference and providing a vision from ancient times to the present, scientific activities on this fishing gear are reviewed in an attempt to explain the reasons behind the crisis of the catches in this fishery, which began at the beginning of the 1960s and which has been extended until recent times. In order to do so and based on a recent publication on the issue, the Bay of Biscay fishery is presented as a fishery with a long tradition on which numerous scientific studies have been carried out and whose data are of great importance in the ABFT assessment group of SCRS (ICCAT's scientific committee). Traditionally, the catches of this fishery have been made up of juvenile specimens (<40 kg) making up more than 97% in number of fishes according to a 62-year series studied (1949-2010). From an analysis of the population, it has been shown that the impact of massive fishing of juveniles in this fishery between 1949 and 1962, together with that of juveniles in Morocco (the Atlantic part) possibly caused the decline of the traditional traps fishery of spawners in the Strait of Gibraltar and the collapse of the spawner fisheries in the north of Europe from the 1960s. This situation continued until 2007, the year from which a Pluri-Annual Recovery Plan (PARP) was adopted by ICCAT for the eastern stock. Since the PARP was implemented, juvenile catches have disappeared from almost all the fisheries, a scenario that coincides with a considerable recovery of the spawning stock biomass in the easter Atlantic and Mediterranean, according to the results of the latest SCRS assessments.
