Determination of fluoroquinolone antibiotics by microchip capillary electrophoresis along with time-resolved sensitized luminescence of their terbium(III) complexes

Abstract: We report on the time-resolved detection of the three fluoroquinolone (FQs) antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENR) and flumequine (FLU). On addition of terbium(III) ions, the terbium(III)-FQs chelates are formed insitu in an on-capillary derivatization reaction of a microfluidic system. The laser-induced terbium(III)-sensitized luminescence of the chelates is measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 337/545 nm. The analytes can be separated and quantified within less than 4 min. A solid phas… Show more

“…Table 4 summarizes the applications to the determination of antibiotics in the period reviewed in this article. As it can be observed, ED [9] and LIF [10,11] have been the selected detection systems for chip-based CE. Application of these devices to river [10] and tap waters [11] or biological samples [9] has been performed showing the usefulness of these devices to determine antibiotics in real samples.…”

“…The identification and quantification of FQs in various biological matrices are important to ensure that they are not present at levels that may pose health risks to people [13,14]. Several methods have been developed for analysis of these drugs in various biological matrices mainly including liquid chromatography [11,12,15], capillary electrophoresis [16][17][18], liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry [19][20][21][22] and microbiological assay [23]. However, due to the complexity of biological matrices, it is difficult to achieve direct separation of target analytes from complex biological matrices.…”
