Determination of Fatigue Following Maximal Loaded Treadmill Exercise by Using Wavelet Packet Transform Analysis and MLPNN from MMG-EMG Data Combinations

Abstract: The muscle fatigue can be expressed as decrease in maximal voluntary force generating capacity of the neuromuscular system as a result of peripheral changes at the level of the muscle, and also failure of the central nervous system to drive the motoneurons adequately. In this study, a muscle fatigue detection method based on frequency spectrum of electromyogram (EMG) and mechanomyogram (MMG) has been presented. The EMG and MMG data were obtained from 31 healthy, recreationally active men at the onset, and foll… Show more

“… Martinez-Aguilar and Gutierrez (2019) analyzed cortico-muscular and cortico-cardiac coupling to study the development of muscular fatigue by electromyography (EMG), electrocardiography (ECG), and electroencephalography (EEG). Bilgin et al (2015) presented a muscle fatigue detection method based on the frequency spectrum of EMG and mechanomyogram (MMG). Scano et al (2020) studied the combined use of NIRS and sEMG in muscle fatigue assessment.…”

“…It has a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than surface EMG and it can monitor the activity of even deeper muscles. This technique is, therefore, often utilized for evaluation of the muscular fatigue [97][98][99][100][101] or of the mechanical delay of muscle contraction [102,103]. The combination of MMG and EMG was already investigated for rehabilitation, control of prostheses, and in robotics.…”

“…Before the test participants were given a two-minute period for warm-up. The Bruce test is a widely used protocol to determine aerobic power, and the stages, the speed of the treadmill and the slope are gradually increased every three minutes until the individual becomes tired [3,4,42]. The test was continued until the participant was observed to be unable to continue, or the participant declared "OK" [19,25,35].…”
